Drainage Swale Construction

Earthcraft Companies constructed a drainage swale for a local farmer in West Jefferson, Ohio, providing a fast, cost-effective solution to remove damaging surface water from an active crop field.

The Challenge

Standing surface water was collecting across the field during heavy rain events, saturating the soil and killing crops. The farmer needed a reliable drainage solution that could be completed quickly and without a major investment - one that would protect the field long-term without disrupting the surrounding land or farming operations.

What We Did

Using grade lasers and a tracked skid loader, Earthcraft cut a precisely graded swale into the field to channel surface water away from the crop area and direct it toward an existing culvert pipe. Grade lasers ensured the swale was cut at the correct slope to move water efficiently without causing erosion or uneven drainage across the field. The tracked equipment minimized ground disturbance, keeping the footprint of the work as small as possible.

The Result

The farmer now has a functioning drainage solution that collects and moves surface water off the field during heavy rain events. Crops are no longer at risk from standing water, and the swale continues to perform without ongoing maintenance or intervention. It's a simple, durable fix that protects the field season after season.
